Quezon City Rep. Ralph Tulfo wants the government to use its savings to fund more free rides to help commuters cope with fare hikes, inflation, and rising fuel prices.

Tulfo said he understands the need to increase fares to help public utility vehicle drivers and operators.

But the fare hikes also pose a burden to workers, small businessmen, and the poor, he said.

The government must come to their aid by offering more free rides, as the present programs offering this service are not enough, he said.

“Kulang talaga ang Libreng Sakay sa light rail na limitado lang sa mga estudyante at ang mangilan-ngilang libreng pamasahe sa ilang unit ng bus carousels sa EDSA,” he said.

Tulfo suggested that the government use savings from the 2022 budget to provide more free rides to commuters.

He said the savings of different offices could be reverted to the general fund of the National Treasury, and the Department of Transportation could then use this to increase the budget for the Libreng Sakay program and the service contracting of buses and jeepneys.

“My appeal to the different national government agencies is to do a bit of sacrifice by giving up their 2022 savings in favor of the DOTR Libreng Sakay because the limited free rides for students on light rail are not enough to cushion the impact of transport fare hikes, elevated fuel prices, and inflation,” he said.
