Manila Rep. Irwin Tieng pays tribute to Gomburza on National Heroes’ Day

Manila Rep. Irwin Tieng took time to remember Catholic priests and Filipino martyrs Mariano Gomez, Jose Burgos, and Jacinto Zamora, or Gomburza, on National Heroes’ Day.

Tieng visited the Gomburza Monument and paid tribute to the legacy and sacrifice of the priests executed by the Spanish colonial authorities on charges of subversion, even as he lamented that Filipinos seem to be forgetting them.

He alluded to the recent incident where the young contestants of a reality show revealed that they did not even know who Gomburza are.

He said people should know that Gomburza are among the martyrs and heroes whom the country is commemorating today, and that their execution played a significant role in the revolution.

He appealed to teachers, who he considers modern day heroes, to make sure that the students of today know about the country’s history and its heroes.

Failing to appreciate our past could bring dire consequences, he said.

He vowed to pursue programs to improve school facilities and to strengthen the education and information sectors.
