Co-equal dapat! Gutoc rejects presidential power to appoint justices
By Prince Golez
Senatorial candidate Samira Gutoc opposes the authority of presidents to appoint justices.
The three branches of government – executive, legislative, and judiciary – are supposed to be co-equal, Gutoc told TV host Boy Abunda in an interview.
“May problema ako sa President’s pen on a justice. Kasi the judicial is co-equal sa executive. So, kung may impluwensya si Presidente sa iyong hustisya, ikaw justice ka, eh di paano yung desisyon, eh dapat check and balance,” the Aksyon Demokratiko bet said.
“Kaya kayo tatlo eh – executive, legislative, judiciary – pare-pareho kayong magkakapatid, pero may kanya-kanyang kingdom, hindi kayo magkaanuhan ng power,” she added.
The Judicial and Bar Council (JBC) names nominees to fill in any vacancy in the judiciary.
The President then chooses from the list made by the JBC.
