MMDA lauds Marikina and Taguig’s anti-smoking campaigns
When it comes to efforts to curb smoking, Marikina and Taguig are leading the way, according to the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority.
The MMDA praised the two cities’ implementation of their respective anti-smoking ordinances that seek to protect the public from the harm posed by cigarettes and e-cigarettes.
“MMDA Chairman Atty. Romando Artes said the agency recognizes the relentless efforts of Marikina and Taguig in protecting the public from the continuing danger posed by smoking (including vape and e-cigarettes),” it said in a statement on Saturday.
The MMDA also held deputation trainings for personnel tasked for enforce anti-smoking ordinances.
The participants were oriented on the harmful effects of tobacco and vaping both to the user and those exposed to its emissions, and were taught enforcement mechanisms including proper use of citation tickets, reporting, monitoring and evaluation.
The trainings were conducted with Action on Smoking and Health Philippines, and Health Justice Philippines.
Local government units in Metro Manila are required to fully implement a 100 percent smoking-or-vape free policy as mandated by President Duterte’s Executive Order No. 26/106 as a method to safeguard public health, according to Dr. Loida Alzona, Director of the MMDA Health and Environmental Protection Office.
