Stella Quimbo: why give P200 ayuda when gov’t can lower fuel prices?
Stella Quimbo flexed her economics prowess as she questioned the Duterte government’s bad policy of a measly P200 ayuda for poor families to keep up with rising fuel costs.
The Marikina congresswoman said it makes no sense.
“Should we waste P33B on a subsidy program that has little impact?,” the politiko said.
“Reducing excise tax rates across select fuel products is still the best way to go,” she added, furthering the point she raised in an ANC interview.
Quimbo holds a doctorate degree in economics.
“As an economist, I believe that the government response must pass 3 tests. First, the relief provided must be immediate. Second, the relief must be sufficient. Third, it must be not inflationary,” she told ANC’s Headstart.
Makinig kasi kayo!
Should we waste 33B on a subsidy program that has little impact?
Reiterating what I said during the Headstart interview, a solid response should be immediate, sufficient, and not inflationary. Reducing excise tax rates across select fuel products is still the best way to go. pic.twitter.com/IcolFoETKi
