Manila mayoralty candidate Alex Lopez has welcomed Manila Mayor Isko Moreno’s signing of an ordinance extending the deadline for paying business taxes until March 31.

Lopez, who’s running under the Partido Federal ng Pilipinas (PFP), said he’s thankful to Moreno for listening to his appeal to give reprieve to business owners.

The original deadline for paying business taxes in Manila is on January 20. Under the ordinance signed by Moreno, business owners can pay taxes and renew their business permits until March 31 without any interest, penalties, or sub charges.

“Ito naman po ang talagang panawagan natin noon pang nakaraang Disyembre 2021, bigyan ng mahabang palugit ng walang charges or penalties ang ating mga kababayan dahil na rin sa nararanasang krisis ngayong pandemya, salamat at nakinig sila sa atin,” he said.

Lopez said he will push for a seven-month extension of the deadline for the payment of business taxes if he wins the 2022 elections.

“Mas humanitarian at compassionate ang ating panukala o policy. Hindi lamang sa business taxes kundi pati ang pagbabayad ng real estate taxes o amillyar, at iba pang bayarin na binabayaran sa city hall [kaya] kailangang pansamantala muna i-defer hanggang Hulyo 2022, para makabangon lahat,” he said.
