P67 per face shield? Mike Defensor questions Joy Belmonte’s pricey purchase

Anakalusugan party-list Rep. Mike Defensor has sought a congressional investigation into the pricey face shields procured by the Quezon City government under Mayor Joy Belmonte, which cost P67.50 apiece.

In House Resolution 2143, Defensor said the city government bought 400,000 pieces of face shields in December 2020 for P27 million without public bidding. The winning supplier was Strength Medical and Drug Supply.

“Whereas, at the time of QC’s purchase, there were news reports that the price of face shields went up to P10 from previous P5. We note, however, that the P67.50 negotiated sale per piece of Strength Medical and Drug Supply and the QC government is more than 600% higher than the going rate of P10 in Binondo for face shields during the same time frame,” the resolution read.

Defensor pointed out that in usual business practice, a bulk sale results in a lower than normal price per unit in consideration of the high volume procurement.

The national government is no longer mandating the use of face shields in public places.
