Taguig Mayor Lino Cayetano has decided against running for reelection in favor of his sister-in-law, Rep. Lani Cayetano.

In a statement, Lino said he “decidedly stepped aside” for Lani, who will be running for mayor. The wife of Taguig-Pateros Rep. Alan Peter Cayetano was mayor of Taguig for nine years until 2019, when she ran for a seat in the House of Representatives.

“God willing, she will be elected the next Mayor of our city. She is a proven leader and there is no doubt that Taguig will be in good hands,” Lino said.

The mayor said he will focus on leading Taguig out of the pandemic in the next nine months by bringing jobs back and opening more opportunities for residents and other stakeholders.

He urged voters to scrutinize the track record of candidates instead of “demonizing political affiliations and personalities.”

“The upcoming elections will certainly be divisive, but to rise above this we must be open and listen to each other,” Lino said.
