Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) chairman Benhur Abalos has denied a news report claiming that the implementation of the enhanced community quarantine (ECQ) in the capital region will be extended until August 30.

In a statement, Abalos said Metro Manila mayors have yet to meet to discuss a possible extension of the ECQ.

Any recommendation that will be made by the Metro Manila Council (MMC), Abalos added, will be based on data, LGU capabilities, and studies by experts.

A report posted online quoted Paranaque Mayor Edwin Olivarez as the source of the news regarding the supposed extension of ECQ in NCR. Olivarez denied there was already a decision on the matter.

Abalos said Metro Manila mayors are focused on monitoring the number of COVID-19 cases in their respective jurisdictions, vaccination rollout, and distribution of ayuda or financial aid to low-income families affected by the ECQ, which will last until August 20.

The Metro Manila Council, where Abalos and Olivarez sit as chairmen, is the policy making body of the MMDA.
