May ayuda ba uli? Metro Manila mayors ready for ECQ but…
Mayors of Metro Manila’s 17 local government units (LGUs) are open to placing the capital under enhanced community quarantine (ECQ) once again if there are enough funds for another round of social amelioration program (SAP).
Metro Manila Development Authority chairman Benhur Abalos said on Wednesday, July 28, that mayors will ask the Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases (IATF) to impose stricter quarantine measures in light of the rising cases of COVID-19.
“However, if the national government has available funds for the Social Amelioration Program (SAP), Metro Manila Mayors expressed NCR’s readiness to be classified under Enhanced Community Quarantine for a period of two weeks,” Abalos said.
“Needless to say, SAP is important to address the concerns of underprivileged families as they will be the ones who will be greatly affected by the ECQ declaration,” he added.
Abalos noted that the growth rate of COVID-19 cases have jumped to 19 percent in the past two weeks, from negative six percent three to four weeks ago.
“As it is, there is now an increase of COVID-19 cases in the NCR. In fact, projections made by health experts show that daily cases may reach up to 11,000 by the end of September 2021 with the assumption that Delta variant of COVID-19 is 60% more transmissible and that the Prevent-Detect-Isolate-Treat-Reintegrate (PDITR) strategy and vaccination performance is status quo,” he said.
“After heeding the advice of health experts and assessment of the 17 Metro Manila mayors, it was agreed to strictly enforce the PDITR, and request at least four million vaccines to protect the NCR population against the possible spread of the dangerous Delta variant of COVID-19,” Abalos added.
