Quezon City Rep. Anthony Peter Crisologo has filed a resolution urging local government units (LGUs) to provide hazard pay to all barangay workers serving as frontliners during the COVID-19 pandemic.
In House Resolution 1834, Crisologo said the crucial role of barangay officials and workers in national crises has been highly emphasized during the pandemic.
“It has demonstrated the significance of their work especially in ensuring that national programs ranging from health promotions to case management and distribution of basic commodities are implemented efficiently on the ground,” the resolution read.
Barangay workers are not covered by the rules of the Civil Service Commission (CSC) and are not entitled to the same benefits of regular government employees.
There are 42,046 barangays in the country based on the September 2020 data of the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG).
“Barangay workers are also community members that need protection. Their contributions in the current fight against COVID-19 shall be acknowledged by providing them with security while they continue to carry out official tasks that require them to face the perils of the pandemic,” the resolution further read.
