Taguig Rep. Lani Cayetano has expressed support for the passage of a bill that would protect the security of tenure of barangay health workers (BHWs) and provide them with an increase in their allowance.

Cayetano said that while Taguig has been able to grant job order status to BHWs, other local government units are unable to do the same.

“Gusto namin pangkalahatan kaya isang batas ang magbibigay-daan na maging posible ito, na ang lahat — buong Pilipinas — ay makaranas nitong pagpapahalaga sa mga BHW natin,” she said in a recent interview in Bacolod.

Cayetano noted that BHWs can also be considered as frontliners in the fight against COVID-19, particularly in their communities.

Under Republic Act No. 7883, or the Barangay Health Workers’ Benefits and Incentives Act of 1995, the honorarium of BHWs come from the internal revenue allotment of barangays.
