Pressure works! Luis Campos welcomes improvement in PH internet speed
Makati Rep. Luis Campos believes the political pressure exerted by the national government on telecommunications companies is bearing fruit as the Philippines has overtaken both Malaysia and Myanmar for the first time in terms of mobile internet speed.
Results of the January 2021 Speedtest Global Index showed the Philippines’ mobile internet speed went up from 22.50 to 25.77 megabits per second (Mbps), and the country advanced another 10 notches from 96th to 86th in the worldwide ranking.
Based on the latest global index, the Philippines now ranks 6th in mobile internet speed among the 10 members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).
The country surged on top of Myanmar (25.21 Mbps, 88th worldwide) and Malaysia (23.74 Mbps, 94th), and stayed ahead of Cambodia (19.98 Mbps, 106th) and Indonesia (17.33 Mbps, 121st).
President Rodrigo Duterte threatened to seize telcos’ assets in his fifth State of the Nation Address in 2020 if their services do not improve.
“Both PLDT Inc. and Globe Telecom Inc. are clearly also gearing up their networks for new competition, ahead of DITO Telecommunity Corp.’s launch of new mobile internet services in a couple of weeks,” Campos said.
