Nakakalula sa dami! Ruffy Biazon calls on DENR to probe plastic waste due to online shopping
Muntinlupa Rep. Ruffy Biazon has called on the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) to look into how much plastic is being used by e-commerce platforms to pack products ordered by customers.
Biazon described the amount of plastic waste generated by online shopping as “worrying.” He cited as an example a small pack of LED strip light connectors he bought online, which was shipped in an oversized plastic pouch around nine times bigger than the pack.
In contrast, Biazon said American e-commerce site Amazon doesn’t use bubble wrap or plastic tape, just cardboard boxes.
“If courier services handle goods and packages with proper care, then would not be a need for sellers to use too much bubble or plastic wrapping just to secure the items they are shipping to their buyers,” he said.
Biazon’s call to probe the plastic waste generated due to online shopping comes at the heels of the DENR’s announcement that plastic straws and plastic coffee stirrers may soon be banned in the country.
