Kailan pwede magdala ng baril? Stella Quimbo seeks probe on PNP’s policies after Tarlac shooting by cop
Marikina Rep. Stella Quimbo is calling for a congressional investigation into the Philippine National Police’s (PNP) policies after a cop shot a mother and son at close range in Tarlac.
In filing the still unnumbered resolution, Quimbo said there is a need to know the PNP’s current standards for evaluating the tactical knowledge and mental fitness of all its uniformed personnel.
“The killings of both Sonya and Frank Gregorio are a symptom of lapses in our law enforcement. Congress must act now to determine what reforms are needed to ensure that PNP personnel are of sound body and mind in the performance of their duties,” she said.
The Gregorios were shot dead by Police Master Sergeant Jonel Nuezca on Sunday, December 20, over a disagreement on the use of “boga,” an improvised noisemaker.
Quimbo said she was “deeply shaken” by the incident, which was caught on video and witnessed by several people, including minors.
“We cannot afford to lose more lives because of impunity in the system, or the policies which lend to unpreparedness or abuse by law enforcement officials, including the use of firearms while off duty. One death is one too many,” she said.
