Manila Rep. Yul Servo recently gathered stakeholders from the sports industry to seek their opinion on a measure proposing to ban minors from engaging in contact sports.

Servo, the chairman of the House Committee on Youth and Sports Development, said during a hearing on House Bill 1526 that athletes’ training usually starts in their youth.

“Marami po sa kampyeon natin ang nagsimulang magsanay sa murang edad, gaya ni Pambansang Kamao, Sen. Manny Pacquiao, na sumabak sa laro nu’ng s’ya ay 12 anyos pa lamang,” he said.

Cavite Rep. Abraham “Bambol” Tolentino, speaking as President of the Philippine Olympic Committee (POC), said the country’s chances of winning in international competitions will decline if House Bill 1526 becomes a law.

As the committee continues deliberations on the measure, Nieto asked concerned entities to heighten measures in protecting the minors engaged in the combat sports and provide them proper nutrition and regular medical check-ups, among others.
