Para ready na pang-Noche Buena! Precious Castelo appeals to employers: Release Christmas bonus early

Quezon City Rep. Precious Hipolito Castelo today urged private sector employers on Tuesday, October 20, to release the Christmas bonus of their workers ahead of the Dec. 25 deadline set by law.

Castelo said the early release of workers’ Christmas bonus or 13th month pay will help ease the financial burden of employees caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Workers could avoid borrowing more money if they get their yearend bonus way ahead of schedule. They could also plan for their expenses for the Christmas season and do shopping early so they would not add to the Christmas rush and traffic,” she said.

Castelo’s statement comes at the heels of Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello III pulled back from his own suggestion to defer the payment of the bonus and declared that it should be paid on or before Dec. 25 as required by law.

Bello also suggested that the government, through the Department of Trade and Industry, extend subsidies to medium and small-scale industries to enable them to comply with the requirement of PD 851.
