Bayan Muna rep appeals to Velasco: Scrutinize 2021 budget, shun ‘pork’
Bayan Muna party-list Rep. Carlos Zarate has asked newly installed House Speaker Lord Allan Jay Velasco to scrutinize the proposed 2021 national budget to ensure public funds will go to projects that will truly respond to people’s concerns.
In a statement, Zarate said the lion’s share of the proposed 2021 General Appropriations Act should go to projects that will generate jobs, healthcare, agriculture and social aid.
“The new leadership should find ways to fund the most needed services of our people now and not those to be used to further curtail their freedoms,” he said.
“As the dust is subsiding on the speakership row the resumption of the budget deliberations should be maximized by the House to effectively fight the covid pandemic and not push for pork-like insertions or allotments,” Zarate added.
The progressive lawmaker vowed that the Makabayan bloc will remain vigilant as plenary debates on the 2021 budget resumes to ensure its passage will not be railroaded.
