Protected on the job: QC provides free flu, pneumonia shots to elderly workers

The local government of Quezon City is providing free flu and pneumonia vaccines to senior essential workers whose jobs are indispensable during the pandemic brought by COVID-19.

Every elderly authorized person outside residence (APOR) from the city’s 142 barangays were given free flu or pneumonia shots to serve as protection to potentially deadly diseases and resistance to SARS-CoV-2 that causes COVID-19 infection.

“Gusto nating bigyan ng karagdagang proteksyon ang ating mga nakatatandang frontliner kasi matuturing silang high-risk sa covid. We want to boost their immune system against covid by giving them flu and pneumonia shots,” Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte said.

From January to August 2020, a total of 9,250 seniors received pneumococcal shots from the Quezon City Health Department, while 7,690 others were given flu vaccines.

Over 300,000 elderly were also beneficiaries of the Kalingang QC, the city’s financial assistance for the vulnerable sector.

Health center staff regularly visit each indigent bedridden seniors. They are provided with services such as when undergoing lab exams and dental check ups. They can also avail of free milk and maintenance medicine.
