House Speaker Alan Peter Cayetano stressed on Thursday that the ruling PDP-Laban is not President Rodrigo Duterte’s sole party, since he is the leader of a multi-party coalition.

The Taguig lawmaker made the remark during an ambush interview in Tarlac City, when he was asked to comment on the defection of four House members, including two Deputy Speakers, from PDP-Laban to the National Unity Party, which is closely allied with Cayetano’s Nacionalista Party.

“Basta’t ang importante sa akin yung koalisyon, supportive sa ating Pangulo. Malaya sila lahat kung anong gusto nilang partido, walang partido, may partido, dalawang partido, tatlong partido,” he said.

Cayetano admitted that he was “close” to NUP.

“Of course, hindi ko itatago, malapit sa akin ang NUP, very supportive ang NUP, weekly ang meeting namin pati ng NP,” he said.

“Pero inaanyayahan ko rin ang PDP. Yan ay, hindi totoo na ang Pangulo, ang partido lang niya PDP, lahat sa koalisyon ay partido ng ating Pangulo, kasama dyan ang HNP (Hugpong ng Pagbabago),” he said, referring to the regional party formed by Duterte’s daughter, Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte.

“Ang HNP, isa sa maliliit na partido, sa numero, pero malaki ang kino-contribute sa Kongreso at sa lokal, lahat ng party na yan, but we have to understand, each politician, each public servant has to decide based on their own analysis, ano ang mas mabuti sa distrito nila. Yun nirerespeto ko yun,” Cayetano said.
