Wes Gatchalian joins DTI officials in checking basic prices of goods in Batangas
Valenzuela City Rep. Wes Gatchalian joined top officials of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) on January 27 in inspecting major supermarkets and public markets in Batangas for the prices of basic goods.
Gatchalian, together with Trade Secretary Ramon Lopez and Undersecretary Ruth Castelo, wanted to find out if there were traders taking advantage of Taal Volcano’s recent unrest to sell overpriced items.
During the inspection, the team found price violations for bottled water and sugar – basic commodities that are essential during calamities. The DTI immediately issued notices of violation and show cause orders to correct these price violations.
Gatchalian appealed to retailers to be “extra sensitive” in doing business after a disaster.
“Basic commodities are critical for the survival of our fellow countrymen who just experienced a calamity. No one should be allowed to take advantage of these kinds of situations,” the lawmaker said.
