Annyeonghaseyo! Abby Binay wows South Korea crowd with Makati’s best practices in disaster preparedness

Makati Mayor Abby Binay impressed foreign politikos and guests in South Korea when she shared how prepared the city was in case disaster happens.

Speaking at the the recently held International Urban Resilience Forum in Seoul, Binay said Makati is the third local government unit (LGU) in the world to have prepared a Pre-Disaster Recovery Plan.

The plan aims to reduce disaster-related mortalities and injuries, the number of affected residents and damage to infrastructure.

As one of the cities where the West Valley Fault traverses, Binay said the local government already made sure residents are prepared for a major earthquake by distributing 92,802 emergency “go bags” and over 25,000 hard hats to public school students.

The mayor also took pride in Makati being the first LGU in the Philippines to establish a Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Academy inside the University of Makati.

The academy aims to train and certify DRRM practitioners who can promptly respond to any emergency.
