After the Recto Bank incident, SOS mechanisms must be in place.

Actor turned Quezon City Rep. Alfred Vargas weighed in on the incident involving a Filipino fishing boat sunk by a Chinese vessel in the West Philippine Sea.

Netizens are fuming over China’s apparent act of bullying, but Vargas wants to take the issue forward by proposing reforms on the Philippines’ end.

The 22 fishermen were left swimming for their life after the ramming incident until a friendly Vietnamese boat came along. Vargas said this shouldn’t be the case next time.

“All Pinoy fishing boats and passenger ships must be equipped with satellite phones, transponders for search and rescue, GPS, and other related portable electronics, so the crew of these maritime vessels can call for help when they are in distress while out at sea,” Vargas said.

It could be quite costly for small boats to follow this, but it may seem worth the try.
