Muntinlupa City Rep. Ruffy Biazon has urged the government to summon Chinese ambassador to the Philippines Zhao Jianhua over the sinking of a Filipino boat by a Chinese vessel in the West Philippine Sea.

In a tweet posted Saturday (June 15), Biazon said Jianhua has a lot of explaining to do regarding the incident.

“The embassy gives a story contradicting the accounts by the Filipino fishermen. Our Navy stands by the fishermen’s story. There’s an indication that maritime militia were involved. I think the ambassador ought to be summoned,” he said.

Investigation by the Philippine Navy showed the Filipino fishing boat was rammed by a Chinese vessel while it was anchored at Recto Bank near Palawan on June 9.

The Navy’s findings were supported by the Filipino fishermen on the boat, who claimed they were hit by the Chinese as they were preparing to sleep.

The 22 Filipino fishermen were rescued by a Vietnamese vessel after their boat sank.

China, however, claimed the Chinese fishing vessel was “besieged” by seven or eight Filipino boats. It denied there was a “hit and run” incident.

Malacañang has said that Zhao should not wait to be summoned to explain the incident.
