For him, it’s ironic that the youth representative regards the young ones lowly.

Muntinlupa Rep. Ruffy Biazon weighed in on the debate over making the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) mandatory among high school students.

He disputed the claims made by Kabataan Rep. Sarah Elago about how the required military training will only stand to brainwash teenagers. Biazon thinks it’s an unfair and sweeping conclusion.

Elago said the ROTC traning will only instill blind obedience among students, rather than discipline and patriotism.

“I think this opinion is an underestimation of the youth. ROTC will only take up a fraction of the students’ time in school,” Biazon said.

What’s more, these students won’t be full-time soldiers on duty anyway.

“A majority of their time in education will still be dedicated to developing their critical thinking. They are not full time military recruits,” he added.

The ROTC bill hasn’t been tackled by the Senate days ahead of adjournment, so all these debates may be moot after all.
