Pia Cayetano wishes more families will get into foster care: Kailangan ng mga bata ng kalinga
Taguig City Rep. Pia Cayetano hopes more families will consider being foster parents to provide care for abused, abandoned or neglected children.
Cayetano on March 22 led the launching of Taguig City’s Foster Care Orientation and Recruitment program, which seeks to encourage foster parenting among families in the city.
The institutionalization of foster care in the country is mandated by Republic Act 10165 or the Foster Care Act of 2012.
Cayetano, the principal author and sponsor of RA 10165, said she drew inspiration from her own experience as a foster parent and eventually as adoptive mom to her son, Rene Lucas Cayetano, 8.
“Ang wish ko ay mapalaki ang lahat ng bata sa uri ng pamilyang kinalakihan ko – a family full of love, where the parents have a sense of responsibility to prepare their children for a better future,” she said.
Cayetano urged Filipinos to consider going into foster care and going through the screening and licensing process of the Department of Social Work and Community Development (DSWD).
A DSWD report in 2017 showed that only 5,819 children were placed in residential care facilities run by the agency.
