Mali na, delikado pa! Lito Atienza wants ‘Doble Plaka’ law repealed

Buhay party-list Rep. Lito Atienza has urged Congress to repeal the law requiring motorcycles to have bigger metal plates in the front amid uproar from riders’ groups.

In a statement, Atienza said it would be better to repeal Republic Act 11235 or the Motorcycle Crime Prevention Act than cause permanent damage to riders and the public.

Riders have complained that having front plates made of metal pose a safety risk as they can be blown off when they are on the road.

“Obviously, the law has fundamental defects and the sooner it is adjusted to international norms and standards on safety, the better for all,” Atienza said.

The lawmaker said police action is the best way to deter crime instead of requiring motorcycles to have large plates in front.

“Ang dapat pagtuunan ng pansin ng mga awtoridad ay dagdagan ang police visibility at patibayin pa ang pagbabantay laban sa mga riding-in-tandem na criminal elements, at hulihin at ipakulong ang mga ito,” he said.
