Anakalusugan appeals to Duque: Scrap VAT for maintenance medicines

Anakalusugan party-list has asked Health Secretary Francisco Duque III to fast-track the removal of the 12-percent value-added tax imposed on maintenance medicines.

In a statement, Anakalusuhan said the scope of VAT-exempt medicines should not be limited to those which treat diabetes, hypertension and high cholesterol levels.

“There are also other maintenance medications that needed to be VAT-exempt,” the group said.

Duque earlier admitted that there is a need to expand the coverage of VAT-exempt medicines to include those addressing other diseases, such as cancer.

In addition to removing the VAT on a wide array of maintenance medicines, Anakalusugan also urged the government to consider making vitamins VAT-exempt.

“We should look at health not just from a prescriptive point of view, but also preventive. Vitamins should also be as affordable to the public as maintenance medicines,” the group said.
