Busted! BOC intercepts P16M worth of smuggled onions at Manila Port

The Bureau of Customs busted on Friday P16 million worth of red onions smuggled from China.

Customs Commissioner Isidro Lapeña said the shipment of ASD Total Package Enterprises Inc. was intercepted at the port on the suspicion that it contained misdeclared agricultural products.

The eight containers from ASD were declared to contain 20,000 cartons of fresh apple when they arrived at MICP on August 14.

Acting on the alert order issued by the MICP Office of the District Collector, MICP authorities found bags of red onions covered by boxes of apples.

Lapeña said the onions were misdeclared as apples so importers will evade paying correct duties and taxes.

He added that smuggling red onions will be a “win-win situation” for importers if the products ended up in the markets because they will be sold at higher prices.
