Pahirap eh! Palace explains P1 fare hike for jeepneys

Jeepney fares may still go down again. Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque said this as he allayed public concerns following the implementation of P1-increase in jeepney fares in Metro Manila.

Roque said the fare hike is due to high prices of oil in the world market.

He explained that it may still be adjusted if oil prices will decrease.

“Yes. So, it’s a result in the increase in the price of petroleum. But we assure you that if the price of petroleum goes down, there would be corresponding adjustments as well,” he said.

On Wednesday, the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) approved the provisional fare increase for public utility jeepneys in Metro Manila, Central Luzon and Calabarzon.

The minimum fare on jeepneys is now placed at P9 from the previous P8.

President Duterte earlier ordered the Department of Energy to look into importing oil from non-Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) members including Russia to cushion the impact of skyrocketing prices of oil in the world market.

“The importation of the Russian diesel is ongoing. The problem is we don’t have enough depots,” said Roque.

“But I think government is encouraging the private sector to build depots now because we’re really focusing on energy security,” he added.
