Stop ganging up on Sereno — Anakpawis solon to House leaders
Anakpawis partylist Rep. Ariel Casilao on Tuesday urged the House leadership to end its “fishing expedition” and to “stop ganging up on” Supreme Court Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno.
Up to now, he said there has been no significant legal basis to initiate her impeachment judging from the complaint filed by lawyer Larry Gadon.
The Makabayan lawmaker also criticized the House leadership’s violation of the Sereno’s doctor-patient confidentiality, a clear infringement of her democratic rights, after the House committee on justice heard testimonies about Sereno’s psychiatric evaluation.
“With all the endless House proceedings, the chairperson of supposedly Committee on Justice, purportedly operating on hard facts and evidences, resorted to urging the chief justice to voluntary resign, to save time and money,” Casilao said.
He added that the House leadership appears to have failed to “totally destroy” the public perception of the Chief Justice, hence, the filing of quo warranto petition against her by Solicitor General Jose Calida.
“This is an outright gesture of ganging up on Sereno, as political pressure for her resignation, instead of the due process of raising the impeachment to the senate as the court, where she expressed confidence to defend against the accusations against her,” the lawmaker said.
“With the executive and the legislative branches, obviously plotting to implement major changes in the governance, the only remaining stumbling block against them is the judiciary under the chief justice, in this light, we call on the public to stand watch for its independence, stand with CJ Sereno,” Casilao said.
