Tinio: Proclamation tagging NPA as terrorist org will lead to crackdown on ‘legal Left’
ACT TEACHERS partylist Rep. Antonio Tinio said the presidential proclamation declaring the communist New People’s Army as a terrorist organization would likely be followed by a crackdown on leftist organizations.
“The regime has already opened another front in its crackdown on the legal Left,” he said.
Tinio said this could already be seen from the “Palparan-style extra-judicial killings of activists, signaled by the murder of activist priest Fr. Tito Paez.”
“However, history has shown that the Filipino people will respond to greater repression with more widespread resistance,” said Tinio, a Makabayan lawmaker.
He said it was telling that in announcing the proclamation, presidential spokesperson Harry Roque referred not to the Human Security Act but to the Terrorism Financing Prevention and Suppression Act of 2012.
“This indicates that the proclamation is not targeted primarily at the CPP-NPA, but will be used to go after legal left-wing organizations and individuals based on allegations that they are providing financial support to the CPP-NPA,” he said.
