De Jesus: Duterte’s tax reform package a ‘deathblow’ to the poor
Gabriela partylist Rep. Emmi de Jesus said the impending approval of President Rodrigo Duterte’s tax reform package is a “deathblow to the incomes of poor families and small businesses.”
“It is expected that whatever version of Duterte’s tax reform law that will be approved at the bicameral level will lead to price hikes of petroleum products, sugar-based beverages, and electricity – as if the current barrage of price hikes is not enough. Sobrang lupit at pahirap nito sa kababaihan at mamamayan ” De Jesus said.
She said the Tax Reform for Acceleration and Inclusion would add up to an “economic big bang” that will hit poor families in the New Year alongside the phaseout of jeepneys, water rate hike due to the P3.4-billion government obligation to Maynilad, and food price hikes.
“This will directly puncture the pockets of poor families and small store owners who will not benefit from tax exemptions and lower income tax brackets under the scheme,” she said.
Both the House and the Senate have passed their versions of the TRAIN measure and are in the process of reconciling the differences in a bicameral conference committee.
