‘Di susuko! NAMFREL to make last-ditch effort for conduct of barangay, SK polls
The National Movement for Free Elections (NAMFREL) will still find a way for the barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) elections to push through in October.
NAMFREL secretary general Eric Alvia said Sunday he will try to appeal to the bicameral conference committee to junk the bill postponing the elections for the second time.
“There is still the bicam so we will appeal our case and submit to their collective wisdom to reconsider,” Alvia said.
The Senate and the House of Representatives have approved their respective bills seeking to postpone anew the October 23, 2017 elections to May 2018.
The local elections was first suspended by Congress in 2016.
If passed into law, the incumbent barangay officials will remain in a holdover position.
Alvia said they are opposing the suspension due to fears that people may accept no election scenarios as normal.
“One win for democracy — no appointment — is good, but to conduct elections as scheduled would be better,” he said.
