Manila Mayor Joseph “Erap” Estrada is standing behind President Duterte in placing Mindanao under martial law.
He said “it’s about time” terrorism in the region is wiped out.
“Itong nangyayari sa Marawi, mabigat ‘yan. Talagang tama si President Duterte sa pag-declare ng martial law,” the Manila mayor said when asked by reporters about his position in the Marawi incident.
When asked if he supports the martial law declaration, he said: “Oo. Talagang dapat tapusin na ‘yan…It’s about time.”
If the military rule is expanded to cover the entire country, as what Duterte has earlier hinted, Estrada said he will not oppose it. “If it is needed, why not? I’m behind him. We should all be behind him.”
As to the possible extension of the Mindanao martial law beyond the initial 60 days as declared by the President, Estrada pointed out: “Well, it depends upon the situation. Kung ‘di pa nasusugpo lahat ‘yang mga ano, e ‘di extend.”
Known for being the only president who declared an all-out war against the Muslim insurgents back in 2000, Estrada said he would even suggest that an all-out military offensive is conducted in Mindanao to flush out terrorists.
“Yes, yes. It’s about time. We only have one flag, one Constitution, one government. Period. ‘Di puedeng may MILF, NPA, wala ‘yan. No. Iisa lang bandera natin. Iisa lang konstitusyon natin.
