‘Di deserving! Alejano hits PH’s re-election to UN Human Rights Council
Magdalo party-list Representative Gary Alejano has questioned the Philippines’ re-election to the United Nations Human Rights Council in light of the human rights violations allegedly committed by the Duterte administration.
In a statement Saturday, Alejano called the Philippines’ victory an “irony” due to President Rodrigo Duterte’s ruthless campaign against criminality and illegal drugs.
“This is a blatant disrespect to the families of human rights violaations under the Duterte administration,” he said.
Alejano noted that no less than the President admitted recently that his “only sin” were extrajudicial killings. Political persecution is also rampant under the current administration, he added.
“Paano magagampanan ng Pilipinas ang mga responsibilidad na kaakibat ng pag-upo sa Human Rights Council kung sa sarili niyang bakuran ay laganap ang patayan at mga paglabag sa mga karapatang pantao?” the lawmaker asked.
The Philippines’ fresh, three-year term at the UN Human Rights Council will start in 2019 and go on until 2021.
