Keeping up with inflation: Luis Campos wants senior citizens’ pension raised to P2K
Makati City Rep. Luis Campos has filed a measure seeking to raise the monthly pension received by senior citizens 70 years and older to P2,000.
Campos said increasing the pension received by senior citizens will allow them to cope with the rising prices of basic goods considering it has been eight years since Congress set their monthly pension at P500.
“An allowance of P2,000 per month, or P24,000 per annum, would serve as a bigger helping hand to needy seniors at least 70 years old and who have absolutely no one else to turn to for financial aid,” he said in House Bill 2653.
The lawmaker noted that Congress has been unable to do its mandate under the Expanded Senior Citizens Law of 2010 to review the pension received by senior citizens every two years.
For 2019, the Department of Social Welfare and Development will set aside P23.18 billion to pay for the P500 monthly allowance of up to 3.8 million senior citizens tagged as “qualified indigents.”
