Kabayan Rep. Salo backs 14th month pay for public and private workers

A partylist solon Friday backed the proposal of the Senate leadership in giving mandatory 14th month pay to employees in the private sector.
Kabayan Partylist Rep. Ron Salo said the measure which was first introduced by the Senate President Vicente “Tito” Sotto III of granting 14th month pay should cover all government employees for both national and local, and all private sector employees regardless of whether they are regular, contractual, casual, or job order.
“The law should benefit everyone, both in the public and private sectors,” said Salo.
Salo explained that as to the timing of this proposed pay benefit, the 14th month pay should be given in November just before Christmas, while the 13th month pay should be given in May before the school opening for most students.
Under the present scheme, government offices and in some private companies split the 13th month pay into two, with the first half disbursed in May while the second half is disbursed in December.
“For now, we let the DBM and DOF crunch the numbers how much it would cost the government to provide this benefit to our government employees, and to identify possible sources of funding so it could be properly deliberated by our lawmakers,” said Salo.
