Akbayan lawmaker blasts Alvarez for floating ‘no el’ scenario

Akbayan party-list Rep. Tom Villarin has scored House Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez for raising the possibility that local elections will not be held next year to fast-track the shift to federalism.
Villarin on Thursday (July 12) called the “no election” scenario mentioned by Alvarez as “off tangent and misplaced.”
“This assertion by Speaker Alvarez shows how detached is the Duterte administration to the real needs of our people,” he said.
Alvarez earlier said the 2019 elections may have to be postponed if the administration is bent on pursuing Charter change. He said Congress’ schedule is tight to focus on amending the Constitution if the filing of the certificates of candidacy will start in October.
Villarin said the Speaker may have floated the “no election” scenario because majority of Filipinos do not support Charter change or are clueless about federalism.
“[No election] should be a condition for the draft federal constitution to prosper,” said Villarin.
