‘Wag gumaya sa PLDT-MVP: Gov’t must ensure 3rd telco doesn’t practice contractualization
By John Carlo Cahinhinan
The third telecommunications company to enter the Philippine market must comply with labor laws, an infrastructure-oriented think tank stressed.
Infrawatch PH convenor and former Kabataan Partylist Rep. Terry Ridon has urged the Department of Information and Communication Technology (DICT) should make the prohibition on labor-only contracting a requirement for the third telco.
“The new major player should make a firm commitment against ‘endo’,” he said in a statement.
Ridon, a former lawmaker, said including a “strict anti-endo commitment” as one of the DICT’s major criteria for selectinf a third telco player will prevent a repeat of labor issues besetting PLDT.
Last month, Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello III ordered PLDT to regularize 7,000 employees considered “indispensable” to its operations.
Bello said the concerned workers are also entitled to benefits from the Manny V. Pangilinan-owned company.
