Bayan Muna to Duterte: Do a Mahathir, Kim Jong Un
Bayan Muna partylist Rep. Carlos Isagani Zarate on Sunday called on President Rodrigo Duterte to do a Mahathir Mohamad, who recently won a landslide election in Malaysia, and freed political prisoners, including his former nemesis Anwar Ibrahim.
“Right after his election Mahathir freed his long time critic Anwar Ibrahim to have a united Malaysia that is facing massive corruption issues under the defeated party of Najib Razak,” the Makabayan lawmaker said.
“Just like in Malaysia now, freeing political prisoners in the Philippines would not only be a great boost to the upcoming peace talks between the government and the National Democratic Front of the Philippines (NDFP), but would also strengthen the unity of Filipinos,” Zarate said.
The leftist congressman also advised Duterte to follow North Korean leader Kim Jong-un on another front.
“North Korea’s Kim Jong-un, now one of Pres. Duterte’s newfound idols, also released political prisoners to serve as a confidence building measure before the start of their peace summit early this month,” Zarate said.
“This can be an Asian trend that the Duterte administration can follow to promote unity and justice among our peoples,” he said.
