Sinong niloloko niyo? Comelec: Sample ballots are campaign materials

The Commission on Elections (Comelec) reiterated that sample ballots cannot be distributed anywhere on election day as it is considered as campaign paraphernalia.
“Iligal po ‘yan, electioneering. Bawal mamigay ng campaign materials on election day,” Comelec spokesperson James Jimenez said in a media briefing on the day of the barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections (May 14).
This reminder came as some voters reported that there are people distributing sample ballots in polling precincts on election day.
Sample ballots are typically filled with names of candidates, which would supposedly serve as a guide for voters.
But Jimenez said politikos and parties distributing sample ballots should just leave it blank if they truly want to help.
“Sinong niloloko mong sample ballot ‘yun?” he said.
“Kung gusto niyo talagang makatulong sa publiko, gawin niyong blanko, para sila ang maglalagay ng choice doon,” he stressed.
However, the Comelec spokesperson said distributing sample ballots on election day cannot be automatically prosecuted as a violation as politikos can easily claim that they are simply being sabotaged.
“Hindi po automatic ‘yung disqualification kahit malinaw na nakasulat ‘yung pangalan doon sa balota,” Jimenez said.
