Pasaway! Man arrested in Taguig for vote buying
A 58-year-old man was arrested in Taguig City for alleged vote-buying shortly after the voting for the barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections commenced Monday morning.
The Southern Police District (SPD) identified the suspect as Teofilo Banares Jr. who allegedly offered P1,000 cash to a voter in exchange for a vote for a barangay councilor candidate.
Banares was arrested at the Upper Bicutan Wet Market around 7:30 a.m.
He will face a complaint for violation of Section 261(a) of the Omnibus Election Code.
Committing any election offense has a corresponding punishment of one to six years imprisonment and deprivation of the right of suffrage.
For public official, he will be disqualified from holding public office and will not be allowed to vote.
Vote buying and selling are prohibited under the law.
