Akbayan assails deportation of European politico
Akbayan partylist Rep. Tom Villarin on Monday slammed the Duterte administration for deporting Giacomo Filibeck, an Italian national and Deputy Secretary-General of the Party of European Socialists (PES), for taking part in protest activities.
Villarin said Filibeck, who was supposed to take part in an Akbayan event, was detained earlier Monday at Mactan International Airport and was later on deported as he is apparently on the government’s watch list for previously criticizing the war on drugs.
Filibeck was part of an International Mission who visited communities affected by extrajudicial killings and openly called for a probe at the height of the ongoing drug war of President Duterte at a press conference last October 10, 2017 in Manila.
“This unfortunate incident only shows how paranoid this government is in keeping the rest of the world blind from the damage President Duterte has done to our country,” Villarin said.
“Poor Filipinos get killed. Local dissenters get harassed. Now, foreign critics get deported,” the Magnificent 7 lawmaker said.
“Indeed, President Duterte leaves no room for opposition and no flights delayed for international human rights advocates. I will file a House resolution to look into this shameful incident,” he said.
