Aral muna bago dada: Bato told to have ‘in-depth’ study of jail problems
Outgoing Philippine National Police chief Ronald “Bato” dela Rosa must study first before dealing with the problems of the Bureau of Corrections.
This was the advice of Rodolfo Diamante, executive secretary of the CBCP’s Episcopal Commission on Prison Pastoral Care, to the country’s top cop who is set to take the helm of the correctional system.
“I think it will be a lot better for [outgoing Philippine National Police Director General Ronald dela Rosa] to have an in-depth study and analysis of the issues confronting the penal system before proposing a solution,” Diamante said.
He said Dela Rosa should not just focus on illegal drugs problem plaguing the country’s penitentiary but also other issues confronting the entire penal system.
“He should engage those who know the situation in as much as he has not been in the correction pillar. He should consult with experts in penology and we are not wanting in them,” the CBCP official said.
Dela Rosa is scheduled to assume his post as director of Bucor next week.
He earlier said that he would end illegal drug trade inside the New Bilibid Prison.
He vowed to account all drug lords in jail and would ask them to swear by the Bible that they would cease their illegal activities.
Dela Rosa, known to be one of the most trusted aides of President Dutere, led the government’s bloody war on drugs, which has claimed thousands of lives in police operations and vigilante killings.
