No term limits for politicos? ‘Hanggang kamatayan na,’ says Alejano
Magdalo partylist Rep. Gary Alejano is wary of the proposal to lift term limits for members of the future Parliament under the proposed federal setup.
“Hindi ako comfortable sa ganoong proposal. Alam naman nating halos pare-pareho ang mukha ng mga politiko,” he said in a press conference.
If term limits are lifted, Alejano said lawmakers would be more capable of perpetuating themselves in power.
In the current setup, House members whose terms were expiring would only be succeeded by their wives or children, anyway, the Magnificent 7 lawmaker said.
In an ideal world, he said the Filipino people would only elect those who deserve it based on merit. “Pero ang taong bayan, malayang malayo po tayo dun,” Alejano said.
Thus, if the proposal to lift term limits succeeds, “hanggang kamatayan na lang ng politiko yan sa pwesto,” he said.
The chairman of the House committee on constitutional amendments said Tuesday he was in favor of removing term limits of the members of the future Parliament in the proposed Federal Republic of the Philippines.
The proposal elicited agreement from at least two other House members, as they began deliberating on proposed changes to the 1987 Constitution and drafting a federal Charter.
“Personally for me, I welcome the lifting of term limits,” said Southern Leyte Rep. Roger Mercado, the committee chairman.
