Mas maluwag kasi! MMDA wants late opening sked of malls to be permanent
Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) is asking mall owners to maintain the late opening hours they had observed during the holiday season to ease traffic especially on EDSA.
MMDA assistant manager for planning Jojo Garcia stressed that the late schedule of malls was able to improve travel time on EDSA by almost 10 percent during the holidays.
“We had expected that Edsa traffic would be much slower because of the holiday season, but it was slightly faster because of late mall openings,” he said.
MMDA data showed that travel speed on EDSA increased by 9.29 percent or 1.62 kilometers per hour, from 17.44 kph in September to 19.06 kph in November and up to early this month.
Garcia said the MMDA had appealed to 16 managers of malls on EDSA to maintain their operating hours from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. for the entire year to curb heavy traffic.
Operating hours were expected to return to 10 a.m. up to 9 p.m. starting Jan. 15.
Garcia noted that traffic is expected to worsen this year when the government starts working on various infrastructure projects under the Build, Build, Build program.
