Here’s what Efren Peñaflorida’s response to Duterte’s offer to head PCUP
Will highly regarded social worker Efren Peñaflorida accept the offer of President Rodrigo Duterte to head the Presidential Commission for the Urban Poor (PCUP)?
According to Duterte’s close aide Christopher “Bong” Go, Peñaflorida was surprised upon hearing the news.
“Nagulat din siya,” Go said of Peñaflorida, who became famous after being named as the CNN Hero of the Year for 2009.
Go said Peñaflorida is still thinking about the offer noting that he has prior commitments as a civic leader.
Peñaflorida, whose advocacy is to provide education to poor kids, was quoted in a previous interview that he was saddened by the deaths of minors in the government’s bloody drug war but he still believed that Duterte administration remained to be “pro-kid.”
Duterte recently fired all the commissioners of PCUP including its head Terry Ridon due to alleged unnecessary trips abroad and weak performance as an agency.
The Chief Executive chided Ridon for leaving the country for eight times since he assumed office last September.
