‘Wag maalarma! Comelec allays fears on office transfer
There is nothing to worry about the impending transfer of the Commission on Elections (Comelec) to a new office.
This was the assurance of Comelec spokesperson James Jimenez especially to political parties with pending poll protests.
“The Comelec has always been very careful to observe all requirements relating to the preservation of documents in its care, to the giving of due notice to the parties, and to the protection of the people’s sovereign vote,” he said.
“Speaking specifically to the concerns raised by the parties, I would say that there is no cause for alarm,” he added.
Jimenez confirmed that they have received a notice to vacate from Palacio del Gobernador, which has been the Comelec’s home since 2007.
He said the building’s structural integrity was the reason cited in the notice.
The poll body earlier signed a memorandum of agreement with the Department of Public Works and Highways for the construction of a proposed permanent office.
For the meantime, the Comelec is considering to transfer to Shipping Center Building also in Intramuros as a temporary office.
