Walang kawala! PNP says cops can still arrest drug suspects
Not so fast, drug addicts!
The Philippine National Police (PNP) said Thursday that police officers can still arrest people using and selling illegal drugs in the streets.
This was despite the order of President Rodrigo Duterte tasking the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) to take the lead in anti-illegal drug operations.
“Kung ang situation warrants warrantless arrest, we can take effect the arrest immediately. Kung the crime is being committed in our presence and we have personal knowledge that a crime is being committed or is about to be committed we will effect the arrest,” said PNP deputy spokesperson Superintendent Vimelee Madrid.
“We will still uphold the law. The use, dealing, buying of illegal drugs is punishable by law so we are still mandated to arrest anytime,” Madrid added.
She noted that even ordinary citizens can arrest drug suspects if they see them doing illegal activities.
Duterte tasked PDEA to be the “sole agency” to conduct anti-drug operations after the PNP drew serious flak for the deaths of three minors under the administration’s drug war.
